Anwar Sunna is a Professor at the School of Natural Sciences, Macquarie University. He holds a PhD in Technical Microbiology from Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Management from Macquarie Graduate School of Management. His research focuses on biocatalysis, enzyme engineering, nanobiotechnology, and bioremediation.
Key affiliations include the Biomolecular Discovery Research Centre and the ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Facilitated Advancement of Australia's Bioactives (FAAB). He leads projects on bioactive compounds, waste valorization, and diagnostic technologies. Notable collaborations involve international teams in biotechnology and environmental science.
Research interests span bioactive peptide discovery, enzyme immobilization, functional nanomaterials, and microbial bioremediation. His work integrates synthetic biology, high-throughput imaging, and smartphone-based diagnostics. Recent studies include leveraging Euglena gracilis for biorefineries and engineering insect systems for pollutant degradation.
He received the 2021 Faculty of Science and Engineering Excellence Award in Research Innovation. His lab develops platforms for cell-free biocatalysis and photodynamic therapy tools using encapsulin nanoreactors.
