Anu Schaper is a Research Fellow at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) since 2008, where she also serves as managing editor of the scientific yearbook Res Musica and EAMT Press. She holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Freiburg (defended summa cum laude in 2023), and master's degrees in Musicology (Freiburg) and German Philology (Tartu University). Her academic journey includes research positions at the Estonian Musicological Society (2019) and coordination of doctoral studies initiatives at EAMT.
Schaper's research focuses on 17th-18th century Baltic music history and cultural transfer theory, with specialized expertise in Baroque music, musician mobility, and archival reconstruction. Her investigations span musical life in Riga, Tallinn, and Gdańsk, examining how political events like the Northern War and plague epidemics influenced cultural production. She employs interdisciplinary methodologies combining musicology, social history, and archival science.
Her scholarly publications demonstrate consistent focus on Baroque music networks in the Baltic region, particularly through the lens of composer Johann Valentin Meder. Recent work explores music's role during epidemics, cultural diplomacy in Swedish-controlled territories, and reconstruction of historical music catalogs. She maintains strong collaborations with German and Baltic research institutions.
