Anu Kylmänen is a University Teacher in Clothing Design at the University of Lapland's Faculty of Art and Design, where she has worked since August 2013. She also serves as a Doctoral Researcher in the Discipline-specific doctoral programme. Her teaching focuses on functional clothing design, design software (Adobe Illustrator, Kaledo), and the history of clothing design. Prior to academia, she worked in vocational education and the clothing industry, bringing practical expertise to her research.
Her research explores the emotional impact of clothing, integrating innovative technologies like body scanners and virtual design tools. Key projects include 'Arctic Design 100%' and 'Nature, Design and Innovation.' She has led collaborative initiatives such as 'Etänä enemmän,' addressing remote work challenges in social and healthcare sectors. Notable achievements include winning the 2016 ISWC Design Exhibition Aesthetic Category award.
Kylmänen holds a Master’s degree in Clothing Design from a University of Applied Sciences and a subsequent MA from the University of Lapland. Her work bridges academic research with industry applications, emphasizing empathy, virtual design environments, and sustainable apparel practices. She actively contributes to international conferences and multidisciplinary projects.
