Anu Aneja is a Professor and Director of the Women and Gender Studies program at George Mason University. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Penn State University and a Bachelor’s in French from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her research focuses on transnational feminist theory, affect and aesthetics across South Asia and the West, and contemporary French, francophone, and Indian literatures. She has authored Feminist Theory and the Aesthetics Within: A Perspective from South Asia (2022) and co-authored Embodying Motherhood: Perspectives from Contemporary India (2016). Her work explores maternal subjectivity, feminist pedagogy, and gender dynamics in education.
- Formerly served as Director of the School of Gender and Development Studies at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), 2015–2018.
- Recipient of the Indian Bank Sponsored Silver Medal (2017) for her article on feminist pedagogy in distance education.
- Edited Women’s and Gender Studies in India: Crossings (2019) and guest-edited thematic volumes in Gender and Education.
Her academic contributions bridge literary analysis, cultural critique, and feminist activism, with a focus on marginalized communities in open and distance education. She currently serves on the editorial board of Gender and Education and teaches courses on feminist theory, transnational gender studies, and global representations of women.
