University of Turkuمعرفی
Dr. Antti Lampinen is a distinguished scholar in classical philology currently holding multiple academic positions in Finland. He serves as a Docent in Classical Philology at the University of Turku's Faculty of Humanities, Department of Classics, and as a Docent of Ancient Languages and Culture at the University of Helsinki. His primary academic appointment is as a TIAS Collegium Fellow at the University of Turku, where he leads a significant three-year research project on the reception of classical ethnographic writing.
Dr. Lampinen's research focuses on ancient ethnographical and geographical literature, with particular expertise in Greek and Roman historiography, descriptions of 'barbarians' in antiquity, religious rhetoric, and oracular centers. His current TIAS Collegium Fellowship project, 'The Reception of Classical Ethnographic Writing from Cassiodorus to the Carolingians,' represents a major contribution to understanding how ethnographic knowledge was transmitted and transformed from the 5th to 9th centuries. This interdisciplinary research examines how descriptions of 'foreign peoples' crossed generic boundaries in Late Antique and Early Medieval Latin literature.
His extensive publication record demonstrates significant scholarly impact across multiple areas of classical studies. Recent works include collaborations with Björn Forsén on 'Oriental Mirages' and 'Barbarians and Empire,' numerous articles on ancient representations of Northern and Eastern peoples, and critical reviews of major works in ethnicity studies. His scholarship reveals a consistent focus on how ancient writers constructed cultural identities and represented 'the other' through literary and ideological frameworks.
Dr. Lampinen's scholarly achievements have been recognized through prestigious awards including:
- Newton International Fellowship (2014)
- Oskar Huttunen Foundation Scholarship (2011)
- Oskar Huttunen Foundation Scholarship (2008)
His international research collaborations span institutions including the University of St Andrews (where he has been a Newton International Fellow since 2015), the Academy of Finland, and the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae. This global scholarly network enhances his research on the transmission of classical knowledge across cultural and temporal boundaries. While primarily focused on research, his docent positions indicate active participation in graduate education and academic mentorship within the Finnish university system.
