Antonio L. Ellis

Dr. Antonio Ellis serves as a Senior Professorial Lecturer in the School of Education at American University, training future special education teachers and directing the American University Summer Institute on Education Equity and Justice. With over two decades of experience including former leadership as Director of Special Education for District of Columbia Public Schools, he actively advocates for systemic change in K–12 education through research and community engagement.

His scholarship critically examines the intersections of race, disability, and educational opportunity, with specialized focus on Black male students with disabilities and individuals who stutter. He develops culturally responsive frameworks that prioritize justice-centered pedagogy and universal design principles to dismantle barriers in learning environments.

As Director of the Summer Institute, Dr. Ellis convenes national coalitions of educators, scholars, and community leaders to address inequities through collaborative action. His influential publications—including the co-edited volume Advancing Special Education Through Improvement Science and Beyond Graduation: Navigating Postsecondary Success for Students with Disabilities—advance inclusive practices across schools, higher education, and faith-based communities while promoting accessibility as a fundamental right.
