Katie Ellis is a Professor in Internet Studies at the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Curtin University, where she also serves as Director of the Centre for Culture and Technology. She is an internationally recognized expert in disability and digital access, contributing significantly to research at the intersection of digital technology, disability, and human rights.
Her research focuses on disability studies, digital inclusion, media representation of disability, and the ethical implications of digital technologies. She has pioneered work in disability and digital television and continues to shape the field through interdisciplinary scholarship.
Ellis led the Critical Disability Research Network at Curtin and has contributed to research integration across centers including the Centre for Human Rights Education and the Centre for Culture and Technology. Her work emphasizes equity, accessibility, and social justice in digital environments.
She has received prestigious recognition, including an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Researcher Award. Her scholarly leadership extends to editing influential publications and curating the Routledge Research in Disability Media Studies book series, which sets the agenda for future research in the field.
Katie Ellis has authored or edited 17 books, including two agenda-setting handbooks, and continues to lead impactful research programs and collaborations. She plays a central role in mobilizing knowledge around health equity and community wellbeing through her involvement with the CERC in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing.
