Dr. Antonio Barrientos is a Professor of Neurology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. His research focuses on mitochondrial biogenesis, particularly the assembly and regulation of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes and mitochondrial translation machinery.
- Education: PhD in Molecular Genetics (University of Barcelona, 1996), BS in Biological Sciences (University of Barcelona, 1992 and 1984).
His work bridges fundamental mitochondrial biology with clinical applications in neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, and aging. Recent collaborations with Harvard Medical School and Karolinska Institute advanced understanding of mitochondrial mRNA structure and dynamics.
Key trends in his publications include mitochondrial translation factors, respiratory chain assembly, and RNA-binding protein functions. His lab has contributed groundbreaking insights into LRPPRC-SLIRP interactions and TACO1's role in Leigh syndrome.
- ICREA Senior Professor Position with Tenure
- Stanley Glaser Award (University of Miami)
Dr. Barrientos mentors researchers like Dr. Michele Brischigliaro, who secured an MDA Development Grant. His lab's work on mitochondrial mRNA folding and ribosome stalling highlights translational innovation in mitochondrial disease research.
