Antonia Behan is an Assistant Professor of Global Design History and Material Cultures at Queen's University at Kingston, affiliated with the Department of Art History and Art Conservation within the Faculty of Arts and Science. She holds a PhD from Bard Graduate Center in New York. Her research focuses on 19th- and 20th-century craft and design, particularly examining entanglements between industrialism, colonialism, and global modernisms.
Research Interests:
- Global Arts and Crafts Movement
- Textile histories (weaving, dyes, materials)
- Colonialism and its material legacies
- History and theory of conservation
- Decentering Eurocentric design narratives
Key Projects: Current work re-evaluates British handweaver Ethel Mairet and theorist Ananda Coomaraswamy, tracing their networks across Britain, South Asia, and Germany (including Bauhaus collaborations). She co-hosts the Craft History Workshop seminar series expanding interdisciplinary craft research.
Publications: Recent works include studies on textile biotechnics, Bauhaus weaving pedagogy, and 19th-century Indian jail workshop carpets. Her writing appears in Journal of Modern Craft and West 86th.
