Antoni Rodríguez Fornells is a Research Professor at the Universitat de Barcelona and ICREA, leading the Cognition and Brain Plasticity Group at IDIBELL. He obtained his PhD in Psychology from the Universitat de Barcelona (1996) and held postdoctoral positions in Germany before joining ICREA. His work focuses on neuroplasticity mechanisms in language learning, error monitoring, and cognitive rehabilitation through music-based interventions. He directs projects funded by institutions like the Spanish Ministry of Science and Fundación La Marató de TV3.
Research interests include: 1) Neural mechanisms of language learning in adults and infants, 2) Executive functions and reward systems interactions, 3) Neurorehabilitation strategies using music in stroke patients, and 4) White matter connectivity's role in cognitive processing. Notable projects include studying enriched musical interventions for stroke recovery (2018-2021) and investigating dopamine's role in learning (eLife, 2018).
Key awards/fellowships: Ramon y Cajal Research Position (2002), Juan de la Cierva Incorporación (2018). Supervised 4 doctoral students including Adrià Vilà Balló (2017) and Grau-Sánchez (2019). Laboratory work integrates EEG, fMRI, and clinical approaches at Hospital Bellvitge-IDIBELL.
