Professor Antje Grosche is a leading researcher in the Department of Physiological Genomics at the BioMedical Center of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She leads a research group focused on Müller cells, the dominant macroglial cells of the retina, investigating their physiological functions and role in retinal diseases.
Her primary research focuses include Biomedical Neuroscience, Molecular & Developmental Neuroscience, and Cellular & Systems Neuroscience. Her work specifically examines retinal degeneration, Müller glia, neuroinflammation, and gene therapy. Her research group investigates the critical roles Müller cells play in maintaining retinal homeostasis, including their functions in metabolite supply, neurotransmitter recycling, ion and volume homeostasis, and potential modulation of neuronal information processing.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Müller cell proteomics, gliotransmission, neuroinflammation, and the complement system in retinal diseases. Her research shows an evolving trajectory toward understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying retinal degeneration and identifying potential therapeutic targets for retinal diseases.
Professor Grosche has advised several graduate students including Patricia Hoffelner, Lew Kaplan, Anna-Monika Pfaller, and Josef Biber. Her laboratory employs advanced techniques including calcium imaging, volume regulation characterization, gliotransmitter release detection, immunomagnetic cell separation, and molecular biology approaches to study retinal physiology.
Her research group actively investigates three main areas: glia-to-neuron cross talk in health and disease, Müller cell gliosis (whether it's friend or foe for neurons), and Müller cells as targets for therapeutic interventions in retinal diseases.
