Anthony Wanis-St. John is an Associate Professor at American University's School of International Service (SIS), where he has been teaching since 2006. He directs the M.A. in International Peace and Conflict Resolution program and teaches courses on International Negotiation and Comparative Peace Processes. Additionally, he serves as a Non-Resident Fellow at the Joint Special Operations University (2023-2024) and supports the Department of Defense in training advisors through the Defense Advising Program and Security Force Assistance Command at Ft. Liberty, NC.

Specializing in negotiations in hostile environments, particularly ceasefires and peace processes, Dr. Wanis-St. John has extensive experience in conflict resolution. His research focuses on secret negotiations, back channel diplomacy, and the role of civil society in peace processes. He has facilitated Track II workshops for Palestinian and Israeli official negotiators and has worked with numerous international organizations including the United States Institute of Peace, World Bank, and USAID. His work bridges academic theory and practitioner experience, often drawing on historical case studies to inform contemporary conflict resolution approaches.
Dr. Wanis-St. John's publications reveal a consistent focus on practical applications of negotiation theory to real-world conflicts, with particular emphasis on Middle Eastern peace processes, ceasefire negotiations, and structural dimensions that affect negotiation outcomes. Dr. Wanis-St. John has secured significant research funding through fellowships and grants, and has extensive advisory experience with military, governmental, and international organizations. His work includes training military advisors deploying to conflict zones, facilitating peace negotiations between conflicting parties, and consulting on rule of law programs in post-conflict countries across multiple continents. He has conducted electoral violence prevention missions in Haiti, trained Ugandan military deploying to Somalia as part of AMISOM, and supported efforts to help both the Arab League and ASEAN develop preventive diplomacy capabilities.
As a Senior Advisor to the United States Institute of Peace, he has unified Darfur armed groups in Chad, conducted strategic review sessions for USAID/OTI's countering violent extremism portfolio in Nigeria, and worked with the National Democratic Institute to help unify the Syrian Opposition Council. His work bridges academic theory with practical field experience in conflict zones worldwide.
