His academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Social Science (2004)
- Bachelor of Health Sciences (2005)
- Master of Psychology (Clinical) (2009)
- Doctor of Philosophy (2009)
Dr Venning's research integrates four interconnected domains: (a) precise measurement of individual wellbeing for health promotion, (b) development of character strengths in at-risk populations to foster sustainable wellbeing, (c) comparative analysis of strength-based versus deficit approaches in mental illness treatment, and (d) clinical refinement of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. His work spans clinical, developmental, forensic, and positive psychology with particular emphasis on digital mental health technologies and low-intensity CBT interventions, informed by the lived experience of health service users.
Recent publications reveal a pronounced focus on systematic reviews examining work-focused CBT for return-to-work programs, interdisciplinary connections between vaping and mental health, and innovative self-help interventions for chronic pain management, demonstrating strong integration of psychology, public health, and technology.
Key recognition includes:
- Flinders CMPH Student-led Teaching Award (2022)
His supervisory portfolio comprises Principal Supervision for one Digital Health project and Associate Supervision for two Psychiatry and one Psychology projects. Professional engagement extends to Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency membership since 2009, chairing TAFE SA's Positive Psychology course development, and providing expert consultation to the University of Malaya, South Australian Catholic Schools Association, Department for Education, Adelaide Football Club, and YMCA Australia. His research has received extensive media coverage in The Advertiser, Sydney Morning Herald, ABC radio, and Weekend Sunrise.
Community involvement includes elected service on the Holdfast Bay Council (Brighton Ward), complementing his academic work with practical policy application and public health advocacy through clinical practice and organizational partnerships.
