Anthony Smith is a Professor in the Practice of Politics at the Australian National University (part-time) and Executive Co-Chair of the Australian-American Leadership Dialogue. Previously, he served as the 30th Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022, elected unopposed three times. His parliamentary career spanned over two decades, including roles as Shadow Minister, Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister John Howard, and chair of key committees like the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters.

His research interests focus on political governance, electoral systems, and parliamentary accountability. He has been recognized for upholding bipartisan standards through awards like the John Button Award and McKinnon Leadership Award.
Post-retirement from federal politics in 2022, he transitioned to academia while maintaining engagement in policy dialogue through executive roles.
