Caryn Coatney is a Journalism Lecturer at the University of Southern Queensland where she has been teaching since 2012. With extensive experience as an investigative news journalist in Australia and internationally, Dr. Coatney brings practical industry knowledge to her academic role.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Journalism and a Master of Arts in Journalism (Research and Coursework) from Curtin University, along with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in both English Literature and History from The University of Western Australia.
Dr. Coatney's research focuses on political journalism, media history, and Australian political communication, particularly examining John Curtin's media strategies during World War II. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary workplace culture discussions, exploring how wartime communication approaches might inform modern work environments and leadership.
Her recent research has examined how Prime Minister John Curtin used media to foster cooperative work ethics during WWII, drawing parallels to contemporary workplace challenges. This research demonstrates her ability to connect historical media practices with current communication needs.
Dr. Coatney has published the book John Curtin: How He Won Over The Media following her Fellowship at the Australian Prime Ministers Centre in the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Canberra. Her journalism research has received global recognition, appearing in numerous academic journals and publications.
She actively engages in research collaboration, consulting, advising, and research supervision, with expertise particularly valuable for media history, political communication, and Australian historical studies.
