Dr. Anthony Savagar is an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Kent and a researcher at the Bank of England. He also serves as an ONS Fellow advising the Office for National Statistics. His academic work bridges theoretical economic modeling with practical policy applications, particularly focused on the UK economy.
His research interests center on macroeconomics and industrial organization, specifically examining how firm-level characteristics and strategic behavior shape macroeconomic outcomes. Key research questions include: why aggregate productivity remains stagnant despite growing returns to scale from technologies like AI; whether policymakers should allow more market concentration when new technologies have greater scale economies; and whether sector-level price changes stem from differences in price-setting ability or cost structures.
Savagar develops dynamic general equilibrium models with industrial organization foundations to generate quantitative predictions and policy insights. His applied public policy research covers market concentration in the UK, firm entry and exit rates, market power dynamics, and economic policies related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He manages the Business Dynamics Dashboard, which provides real-time statistical data on UK firm creation, destruction, and survival with aggregate, sectoral, and regional analysis. This tool, based on Companies House register data, receives regular media coverage and is cited as Galanakis, Y., Hobbs, J., & Savagar, A. (2025). UK Firm Creation: Dashboard App.
Prior to his current positions, Savagar advised the Department for Business (DBT) and Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) as an academic consultant and completed visiting periods at the St Louis Federal Reserve and OECD. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Cambridge Faculty of Economics during two periods (April-July 2019 and May 2024).
