Anthony Percival-Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Western University. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of morphogenesis, particularly the role of HOX proteins in developmental processes in Drosophila melanogaster. He investigates how these transcription factors regulate gene expression and contribute to segment identity and body plan formation.
His research interests include understanding the functional organization of HOX proteins, exploring phenotypic nonspecificity in transcription factor activity, and analyzing post-translational modifications of HOX proteins such as Sex combs reduced. His work bridges molecular genetics, developmental biology, and evolutionary processes.
Over his career, he has advised numerous students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have pursued academic, clinical, or industry roles. His lab emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, supporting trainees at all levels from undergraduates to postdoctoral researchers.
Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding pleiotropy in HOX proteins, CRISPR-based gene studies, and pheromone-induced developmental responses in Drosophila. His work has been published in journals such as Genetics, PLoS One, and Development, Genes and Evolution.
