
Anthony Pagden

Anthony Pagden is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at UCLA, specializing in the cultural, political, and legal relationships between Europe and non-European societies from the 15th century onward. His research examines empire legitimization, cosmopolitanism, and European identity formation.
Author of The Enlightenment and Why It Still Matters (2013) and Lords of All the World (1995), Pagden holds a D.Phil. from Oxford. Previously, he held positions at Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, and the European University Institute.
His current work analyzes citizenship in imperial contexts and Enlightenment critiques of colonialism. He teaches courses on international relations theory and the history of political thought.
