- Georgia Institute of Technology: Professor of the Practice in Chemistry
Professor Arduengo's research interests center on the chemistry of new or unusual bonding arrangements, particularly in main group elements. His work seeks to develop new materials and sustainable synthetic methods with applications in electronic materials, thermochromic materials, catalytic transformations, environmentally-friendly automotive paints, and pharmaceutical intermediates. A significant portion of his research involves "Xylochemistry" - rebuilding chemical manufacturing infrastructure on renewable biomass, specifically wood, through collaboration with the Opatz group at the University of Mainz, Germany. His group also participates in international efforts to develop sustainable, low-cost manufacturing strategies for critically important medicines.
His most influential work includes research on stable crystalline carbenes, which has been highly cited in the field of organic chemistry. His publications span main group chemistry, with particular focus on unusual bonding arrangements in elements like arsenic, phosphorus, antimony, and bismuth.

Professor Arduengo has mentored numerous undergraduate researchers through the Arduengo Research Group, providing opportunities for international research exchanges with laboratories in Japan and Germany. His group participates in significant collaborative efforts including the JSPS-NSF "Core-to-Core" research program and collaborations with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to develop chemical technologies for repatriating critical pharmaceutical capabilities to the United States.
