Anthony Douglas is a professor of Neurology and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Brown University's Warren Alpert School of Medicine, with prior academic appointments at Duke, Harvard, and the University of Missouri. His research spans cellular and molecular neuroscience, brain tumor pathobiology, and neuromuscular disorders, supported by grants from the NIH, NSF, and private foundations.
He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis (1978), followed by M.D. and Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from Duke University (1984). Certified in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology, he serves as President of the American Association of Neuropathologists and directs the Neuropathology Division at Lifespan.
His research focuses on translational biology of brain tumors, including
- Isolation and molecular profiling of glioblastoma stem cells
- Epigenetic regulation in malignant gliomas
- 3D tumor organoid models for invasion and resistance studies
- Magnetic nanoparticle-based chemotherapy delivery
Scientific Awards:
- Feodor Lynen Research Award (Humboldt Foundation)
- Clinical Investigator Development Award (NINDS)
- Excellence in Teaching Awards (Brown, Missouri)
- International Society of Toxicology Awards
He collaborates with researchers in pathology, engineering, and neuro-oncology, and has contributed to textbooks like Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease. His work bridges basic science and clinical translation, with leadership roles in national neuropathology societies.
