Anthony Chesman

Dr. Anthony Chesman is a Principal Research Scientist and Group Leader at CSIRO Manufacturing, where he serves as the Research Director of the Devices and Engineered Systems Program and leads the Renewable Energy Systems Group. He joined CSIRO in 2011 and currently manages over 35 staff and 20 visitors/affiliates across multiple research teams.

His educational qualifications from Monash University include:

Dr. Chesman's primary research focus is on developing earth-abundant thin-film solar cells using high-throughput, solution-processable methods to enable flexible photovoltaic devices manufactured via affordable mass-production techniques such as roll-to-roll printing. This work aims to significantly reduce the cost of next-generation solar cells. Additionally, he is involved in the development of nitrogen vacancy diamond (NVD)-based quantum sensors for chemical analysis. His technical expertise encompasses nanocrystal synthesis, nanomaterials characterization, photovoltaic device engineering, X-ray crystallography, and inorganic chemistry.

His distinguished scientific awards and fellowships include:

• Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) from the Australian Research Council (2013-2016)
• Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Postdoctoral Fellowship at CSIRO (2011-2013)

As Group Leader of the Renewable Energy Systems Group, Dr. Chesman oversees six key research teams: Electrical Machines and Battery System, Battery Materials and Design, Printable PV, Quantum Batteries, Quantum Biotechnology, and Automation and Sensing. His leadership extends to community roles including membership on the Australian Synchrotron Powder Diffraction Beamline Program Advisory Committee (2019-2022), organization of the Pacifichem 2020 symposium, and previous chairmanship of the Australian Synchrotron User Advisory Committee (2016-2017).
