Prof. Dr. Annika Frahsa serves as Head of the Research Group on Community Health at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), University of Bern, Switzerland. Her leadership focuses on advancing community health initiatives through participatory frameworks within healthcare systems, emphasizing health equity and empowerment for vulnerable populations.
Academic credentials include a Habilitation in Social and Health Sciences from the University of Tübingen (2021), PhD in Sport Science from FAU Erlangen-Nuremberg (2013), and Diplom-Politologin (2006). Additional training includes the CREPUQ Exchange Programme at McGill University (2004-2005) and Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation fellowship (2004-2006).
Research integrates qualitative ethnography and the capability approach to address health promotion in marginalized communities, healthy urban environments, and empowerment through co-creation. Methodologically innovative, her work employs participatory action research to tackle structural barriers in healthcare access, particularly for socially disadvantaged women and elderly populations in institutional settings.
Analysis of 2023-2025 publications reveals three dominant trends: physical activity interventions in aged care (evident in BaSAlt cohort studies), pandemic preparedness through stakeholder engagement, and urban health governance frameworks. Her scholarship consistently bridges science-policy gaps, exemplified by studies on vaccine polarization and Swiss health equity implementation.
Prof. Frahsa directs the Community Health and Health Care Systems research group, driving projects like BaSAlt that combine mixed-methods approaches with organizational learning theories to transform nursing home activity programs. Her team actively develops co-creation methodologies for global health initiatives, including pandemic cohort studies and urban health equity frameworks.
