Professor Annie Sutherland is a Professor of Medieval Literature at the University of Oxford's Faculty of English Language & Literature and holds the Rosemary Woolf Fellowship at Somerville College, where she serves as a Tutor in Old and Middle English. Her research focuses on vernacular devotion in late 13th- to early 15th-century England, with a particular emphasis on Middle English psalm translations and their impact on literary voice development. She is completing a book, English Psalms in the Middle Ages, exploring how these texts were read, performed, and altered in medieval contexts. Current projects include investigating continuities between Old and Middle English translations and analyzing the understudied genre of Middle English Primers.
Her work integrates codicological evidence to examine medieval reading practices, arguing that psalms demanded performative engagement and were often revised during circulation. Future research will address early Middle English devotional and homiletic writing, with outputs likely including journal articles.
Professor Sutherland supervises Masters and DPhil students in medieval literature and textual studies. Her academic contributions include edited volumes and chapters on medieval temporalities and devotional compilation. She is affiliated with Somerville College and the Faculty's research initiatives, contributing to both teaching and scholarly discourse on medieval English literature and culture.
