Her research centers on Ancient Philosophy as a transformative practice, examining Plato and Stoicism through lenses of self-care (epimeleia heautou), philosophical therapy, and holistic life approaches. She challenges the notion of ancient philosophy as purely historical, emphasizing its relevance to modern psychology, education, and ethical living. Her work integrates Nietzschean and Foucauldian genealogy to trace how philosophical ideas shape contemporary bodily experiences and cultural norms, particularly regarding gender and sexuality.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals consistent engagement with Platonic dialogues and Stoic texts, focusing on self-transformation, political philosophy, and gender dynamics. She frequently bridges ancient concepts like 'care for the self' with modern therapeutic practices, while examining how philosophical ideas imperceptibly influence cultural frameworks. Her scholarship shows increasing attention to feminist reinterpretations of classical texts and the educational applications of ancient philosophical exercises.
Professor Larivée has mentored nine graduate students to thesis completion, with multiple recipients of Senate Medals pursuing doctoral studies at institutions including Queen's University, McGill University, and Brown University. Her supervision spans topics from Aristotelian virtue ethics to Stoic diagnostics in Senecan drama, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to ancient philosophy as a living practice.
