Dr. Annette Louise Bickford is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Science at York University, cross-appointed to Graduate Programs in Social & Political Thought and Humanities. Her research spans historical anthropology, critical race theory, and environmental studies, with current focus on climate change, critical animal studies (particularly orcas), and food security. She authored Southern Mercy: Race and American Civilization in Juvenile Reform (2016), examining racialized mercy in post-emancipation America.
Education includes a PhD in Sociology from York University, MA in Social-Cultural Anthropology from University of Toronto, and BA from University of Toronto. Research explores ideological frameworks linking environmental crises, racial justice, and political economy.
Her publications analyze socio-ecological intersections, feminist critiques of neoliberal policies, and colonial impacts on Arctic communities. Awards include the President’s Teaching Award (2013) for pedagogical excellence.
