Annette Brömdal is an Associate Professor in Sport, Health and Physical Education at the University of Southern Queensland’s School of Education. She holds a PhD from Monash University and is a nationally and internationally recognized researcher in gender, sexuality, and health, with a focus on LGBTQIA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities. She leads major funded research projects and collaborates with government and community stakeholders across Australia and internationally.

Her research centers on bodies, gender, and sexuality in elite sports, healthcare, education, and correctional systems. She employs co-design methodologies and critical pedagogy to advance health equity and human rights. Her work intersects sociology, medical ethics, criminology, and education, with a strong emphasis on transgender and intersex justice.
Her recent publications explore themes of racial justice in sports, school refusal among vulnerable youth, and historical HIV/AIDS advocacy. These reflect a consistent commitment to social justice, bodily autonomy, and systemic reform.

Annette supervises 11 HDR students and has guided over 27 students to completion. She has secured over AUD$6.3 million in research funding, including MRFF grants. She serves as Director of Non-Initial Teacher Education Programs and Academic Team Leader at UniSQ. She is also a member of the Human Research Ethics Committee and the SAGE Athena SWAN Committee, demonstrating leadership in governance and inclusion.
She is affiliated with the Institute for Resilient Regions and the Centre for Health Research at UniSQ, and collaborates with scholars at Brown and Vanderbilt Universities. She is an editor for the International Journal of Transgender Health and her work has informed UN and WPATH policies.
