Dr. Annet Nieuwhof is a Postdoctoral Fellow and Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of Groningen's Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on the terp and wierden landscapes of northern Netherlands, exploring habitation history, ritual practices, and material culture from the Iron Age through the Early Middle Ages.
Education: She holds a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Groningen (2015), preceded by a Master's (2001) and Bachelor's (1988) in Archaeology, and a prior degree in Theology and Religious Studies (1988).
Research Interests: Her work examines landscape dynamics, pottery analysis, ritual practices, and human-environment interactions in coastal salt marshes. Key projects include studies of the Wijnaldum and Ezinge terps, investigating metallurgy, burial practices, and Anglo-Saxon migration impacts.
Publications: Over 96 scholarly works, including monographs on ritual practices and terp habitation, and peer-reviewed articles in journals like Historical Metallurgy and Environmental Archaeology.
Awards: Recognized with the Johanna Mestorf Award (2017) and W.A. van Esprijs Award (2016) for contributions to archaeological research.
Labs/Teams: Active in the Terp Research Group and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects like the Sachsensymposion and Wadden Sea cultural landscape studies.
