Anne Wand

Dr. Anne Wand is a Conjoint Associate Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Sydney's Concord Clinical School and a senior staff specialist in Older Persons’ Mental Health at Sydney Local Health District. Her work combines clinical practice with translational research, focusing on improving mental health outcomes for older adults through evidence-based interventions.

She holds qualifications including a PhD and advanced certifications in Old Age Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry from the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). Her research spans self-harm prevention, delirium management, advance care planning, and cultural competency in psychiatric assessment.

• Research Interests: Self-harm/suicide in aging populations, delirium detection, decision-making capacity, culturally sensitive care, and liaison psychiatry.
• Teaching: Undergraduate training in geriatric mental health assessments and postgraduate education on delirium prevention and consultation-liaison practices.

Her recent projects include developing aftercare models for older self-harm survivors, evaluating dementia interventions (e.g., MAPS pilot program), and investigating opioid use in elderly chronic pain patients. She also explores the societal impact of ageism on healthcare outcomes and suicide risk.

• Awards: Won the 2019 Coast Association Tow Research Award, was a 2019 Prince of Wales Hospital Foundation Medal finalist, and received a 2020 Dean's Award for her PhD thesis.

In grants and supervision, she leads the Moyira Elizabeth Vine Fund-supported study on schizophrenia and advance care planning. Her trainee projects have addressed homicide-dementia links, capacity to refuse treatment, and climate change anxiety. She collaborates with international bodies like the International Psychogeriatrics Association and contributes to policy discussions on Zero Suicide Framework adaptations.

She is affiliated with the Ageing Futures Institute at UNSW and actively involved in clinical teams such as the St George Acute Care Team, focusing on acute psychiatric care pathways in general hospitals.
