Anne Tietjen is a Professor of Landscape Architecture and Transformation at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. She has held academic positions at the university since 2012, progressing from Assistant Professor (2012-2016) to Associate Professor (2016-2023) and Full Professor (since 2023). Her work bridges theory and practice at the intersection of landscape architecture, urban design, and planning, with a focus on the transformation of existing built environments and landscapes.
Her research interests span multiple interconnected domains including strategic design and planning, urban/rural public space, heritage in planning, and design-based research methods. Tietjen's work is situated within relational spatial design and planning theory, specifically based on actor-network theory. She has a long-standing interest in collaborative transdisciplinary research and democratizing knowledge production with design-based tools, particularly architecture exhibitions. Her research addresses sustainable urban and rural development and quality of life for more than humans, with particular attention to the politics and agency of design.
Analysis of her publication trends reveals a consistent focus on rural transformation and strategic planning, with increasing attention to climate heritage and democratic dimensions of public space. Her work shows a methodological commitment to design-based research and education, often using exhibitions as research tools. The geographical scope of her research spans from local Danish contexts to European collaborations, with notable projects in social housing and rural transformation across multiple countries.
Professor Tietjen has secured significant research funding for projects including Climate Heritage Futures for Mandø (2024-2025), Quality of Life in Peripheral Rural Areas (2018-2023), Public Space in European Social Housing (2019-2022), Exploring Public Space in Rural Transformation (2019-2022), Reconfiguring Welfare Landscapes (2016-2020), and DEMOSSPACE (2016-2020). She leads the Transformation Studio course in the MSc Landscape Architecture program, which functions as an education-based design research laboratory collaborating with Danish municipalities.
Tietjen brings extensive practical experience to her academic work, having 12 years of international experience in architecture and urban design practice before joining academia. She occasionally works as a consultant for strategic design and planning projects with Danish architecture firms. Her external positions include serving as an external examiner for higher artistic education programs in Denmark (2018-2022) and for engineering degrees in design and architecture (2018-2022), as well as chairing the expert group for architecture, design, product development and urban planning (2017-2021).
