Anne Sofie Vedsted Hammer is a veterinary pathologist and Associate Professor at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. She serves as the daily coordinator for the Veterinary Pathology Service of the DK-VET consortium and as the biosafety officer for BSL2 and BSL3 necropsy rooms used by the service.
Dr. Hammer has special interest and expertise in pathological methods applied in diagnostics, research and surveillance of diseases, with particular focus on Scandinavian wildlife and domestic carnivores. Her research has primarily centered on prevention and diagnostics of infectious diseases, including investigations of distemper, influenza, SARS-CoV-2 and Aleutian disease virus.
Her recent publication record demonstrates a strong emphasis on wildlife disease surveillance, particularly concerning mink and other carnivores, as well as emerging pathogens with zoonotic potential. She has been actively involved in investigating SARS-CoV-2 transmission in Danish mink populations and avian influenza outbreaks affecting both poultry and wildlife species. Her work bridges veterinary pathology, virology, and public health, with particular attention to disease ecology in Scandinavian ecosystems.
Dr. Hammer maintains an active presence in the scientific community through numerous conference presentations and collaborations. She has participated in events including the EWDA Conference 2024, nWDA biannual meeting 2025, and various mink-focused seminars. Her media engagement includes contributions to public understanding of wildlife diseases, such as the 2024 article 'Sygdom får sultne ræve til at søge mod villahaver' (Disease makes hungry foxes seek out suburban gardens).
As a member of the DK-VET consortium, she contributes to national veterinary pathology services while maintaining her research program focused on infectious disease dynamics in both domestic and wild animal populations. Her work has significant implications for animal health, wildlife conservation, and understanding potential zoonotic disease transmission pathways.
