Professor Antti Sukura is a Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, located at the Viikki Campus. He was appointed to a permanent position in 2002 and has served in significant administrative roles including Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for 15 years (2007-2021) and previously as Head of the Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine.
Professor Sukura's primary research interests focus on Veterinary Pathology and Parasitology, with extensive work in zoonotic diseases, infectious disease transmission, and comparative pathology. His research spans multiple species including domestic animals, wildlife, and their interfaces with human health, aligning closely with the One Health approach. He has contributed significantly to understanding equine papillomavirus infections, feline atherosclerosis models, canine immunodeficiencies, and SARS-CoV-2 transmission in mink models. His work often bridges basic science with practical clinical applications to address important questions in disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
His publication record demonstrates a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research connecting veterinary medicine with human health concerns. Recent work has focused on using animal models to understand human diseases (particularly atherosclerosis in cats), investigating viral transmission dynamics (especially SARS-CoV-2 in mink), and exploring genetic mechanisms underlying various pathological conditions in companion animals. His research frequently addresses One Health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface.
Professor Sukura has supervised 19 doctoral theses in veterinary pathology and parasitology, contributing significantly to the training of the next generation of veterinary pathologists. His research has been supported by various funding sources including ministry funding, private foundations, and non-profit organizations. Current projects include studies on SARS-CoV-2 transmission in mink, parasite infections in Finnish pets, and molecular characterization of various pathogens.
As a key figure in the Helsinki One Health (HOH) initiative, Professor Sukura has helped position the University of Helsinki as a recognized leader in One Health research. The initiative brings together multiple faculties (veterinary medicine, medicine, agriculture, pharmacy, and social sciences) to address complex health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface. During the COVID-19 pandemic, HOH researchers provided valuable expertise to the Finnish and international media.
