Anne Marit Risum Waade

Anne Marit Risum Waade is an Associate Professor and Head of Department in the Department of Communication and Culture – Media Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark. She is actively engaged in research, teaching, and academic leadership, with a strong focus on television drama, Nordic noir, transnational narratives, and the representation of Arctic landscapes and ecological crises in media.

Her research interests center on the intersection of media, culture, and geography, particularly how television constructs national and transnational identities. She explores themes such as sustainability in television production, the Anthropocene in visual culture, and the geopolitical representation of the Arctic in Nordic and European dramas. Her work often examines how landscapes function narratively and ideologically in television series, especially in the context of climate change and cultural transformation.

Waade has authored or co-authored numerous publications, including recent articles and book chapters on drone usage in Danish television, the portrayal of Greenland in Borgen - Power & Glory, and multi-level governance in European crime series. Her recent work reflects a growing trend toward ecocritical and geocultural analysis of television, emphasizing sustainability, national identity, and transnational storytelling.

She has participated in significant research projects such as Horizon 2020’s DETECt, AHRC TV production in Small Nations Network, and the FKK project on Danish TV series as cultural exports. These projects highlight her involvement in transnational collaborations and her contribution to understanding the global reach of small-nation media.

Waade is also active in academic service, having organized workshops, delivered conference presentations, and served as a journal editor and peer reviewer. She has contributed to pedagogical innovation through the use of video essays in teaching television studies.
