Anne M. Baranger is the Interim College Dean and the Gilbert Newton Lewis Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from MIT (1988) and Ph.D. from UC Berkeley (1993), followed by postdoctoral work at Yale University (1993-1996). She previously held faculty positions at Wesleyan University (1996) and the University of Illinois (2006) before joining UC Berkeley in 2011.
Her research focuses on chemical education, curricular development, and assessment, aiming to enhance STEM education through evidence-based practices. Key projects include improving undergraduate research experiences, advancing problem-solving in organic chemistry courses, developing near-peer mentoring programs, and integrating green chemistry principles into laboratory instruction.
Notable awards include the Rudolph Anderson Postdoctoral Fellowship (1993-95), Donaghue Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship (1995), Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2002-2004), and the ACS-CEI Award for Sustainability in Chemistry Education (2015).
She actively contributes to the Chemistry department’s mission as a national leader in research and education, while also engaging in diversity and inclusion initiatives and affiliations with the Chemical Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
