Anne M Stey, MD serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery (Trauma and Critical Care) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. A surgeon-scientist with dual expertise in trauma surgery and health services research, she directs the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative—a 55-hospital network focused on optimizing trauma care delivery and reducing systemic inefficiencies across the Midwest.
Dr. Stey's educational foundation includes:
- BS: University of Rochester (2004)
- MS: London School of Economics and Political Science (2008)
- MD: Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University (2009)
- General Surgery Residency & Chief Residency: Mount Sinai (2010-2016)
- Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellowship: UCLA (2014)
- Advanced Fellowships: Memorial Sloan Kettering (Pediatric Surgical Oncology, 2017), UCSF (Surgical Critical Care & Trauma, 2018-2019)
Her research program integrates implementation science, artificial intelligence, and user-centered design to address critical gaps in trauma systems. Current work focuses on ensuring 'right patient, right place, right time' care through mixed-methods analysis of transfer barriers, equity-focused quality metrics, and AI-driven triage solutions—aiming to make the US healthcare system more efficient and equitable for critically injured populations.
Recent publications (2025) reveal consistent themes: trauma system readiness assessment, pediatric firearm injury disparities correlated with socioeconomic indices, timeliness barriers for unhoused patients, and human-centered trauma triage redesign. These studies collectively demonstrate methodological innovation through mixed-methods approaches and emphasize health equity as a core outcome in acute care delivery.
Dr. Stey's scientific recognition includes:
- Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Award (2022)
- Four consecutive Department of Surgery Research Mentor Awards (2021-2024)
- Alpha Omega Alpha induction (2024)
- Multiple Emergency Medicine Teaching Awards (2020-2023)
- Mount Sinai clinical excellence prizes (2009, 2016)
She secures major funding from NIH, AHRQ, American College of Surgeons, and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma to support her trauma system optimization initiatives. As Director of the Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative, she mentors junior faculty and residents in health services research while leading statewide quality improvement efforts. Her professional leadership extends to ACS Health Information Technology Committee and Chicago Committee on Trauma chairmanship.
Dr. Stey co-leads initiatives within Northwestern's Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine and Institute for Public Health and Medicine. She actively shapes national trauma policy through her role as Chair of the American College of Surgeons Young Fellows Association Communication Committee and membership in the IDPH Illinois Partnership for Safety Committee.
