Prof. Anne Looney is the Executive Dean of the DCU Institute of Education, leading an institution focused on advancing education research and practice. She holds a doctoral degree from the Institute of Education in London and has extensive experience in education policy, having served as Chief Executive of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) from 2001 to 2016, followed by a role as interim Chief Executive of the Higher Education Authority. Her career spans teaching in post-primary schools for 14 years, academic research, and leadership in curriculum development. She has held a professorial research fellowship at ACU’s Institute for Learning Sciences and Teacher Education in Brisbane (2014/15).
Her research focuses on curriculum and assessment frameworks, school culture, educational reform, and religious/moral education. Key areas include the intersection of international testing and policy, teacher professionalism, and comparative education systems (e.g., Australia-Ireland). She is incoming President of the International Professional Development Association, reflecting her global influence in education leadership.
Prof. Looney’s publications and presentations address policy implementation challenges, formative assessment practices, and the role of teachers in shaping educational systems.
