Kristen Looney is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University, holding appointments in the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and the Department of Government within the College. Her research focuses on rural development, governance, and comparative politics in East Asia, particularly China, Taiwan, and South Korea. She earned her B.A. in Chinese Studies from Wellesley College (2001) and a Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University (2012).
Her academic work examines the role of rural modernization campaigns in shaping development outcomes. Her first book, *Mobilizing for Development: The Modernization of Rural East Asia* (2020), analyzes how campaigns and institutions influenced development in Taiwan, South Korea, and China. Dr. Looney’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation, and others.
