Dr. David Schak is a retired Associate Professor and current Adjunct Professor at Griffith University's Griffith Asia Institute. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (1973) and specializes in Chinese social organization, culture, and comparative studies between Taiwan and mainland China. His research spans topics like family dynamics, religious institutions (Buddhism and Protestantism), civil society development, and business culture in Chinese contexts. He has supervised four doctoral students in areas including Taiwanese cuisine, migrant health, and disability services.
His funded research includes major grants from the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation and others, focusing on civility, civil society, and sociopolitical dynamics in Asia. Notable publications include a monograph comparing civility development in Taiwan and China, and works on socially engaged Buddhism and Protestantism in China.
Collaborations include international conferences on civil society and interdisciplinary projects with institutions like Tzu Chi University. His current focus remains on Taiwan-China relations and global sociopolitical trends.
