Anne Groton is a Professor of Classics, Department Chair of Classics, and Director of Ancient & Medieval Studies at St. Olaf College. She has served in leadership roles since 1981, including the Marie M. Meyer Distinguished Professorship (2017–2020). Her expertise spans Greek playwright Menander, classical pedagogy, and interdisciplinary ancient studies.
Education: A.B. in Latin & Greek (Wellesley College, 1976), M.A./Ph.D. in Classical Studies (University of Michigan, 1977/1982).
Research Interests: Specializes in Menander's plays, classical language pedagogy, and ancient drama. She has authored influential textbooks like 38 Latin Stories and From Alpha to Omega, and co-edited Ab omni parte beatus.
Awards: Recipient of the Bolchazy Pedagogy Award (2016), Gertrude Hilleboe Award (2007), and Eta Sigma Phi's Lifetime Achievement Award (2023).
Teaching & Service: Directed student productions of ancient comedies, advised Blue Key Honor Society, and served as CAMWS President (2019–20). Active in Phi Beta Kappa and held NEH Fellowships.
Labs/Teams: Leads interdisciplinary Ancient & Medieval Studies programs and collaborates on educational outreach through classical drama performances.
