Anne Gotfredsen is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umea University, Sweden, and is currently stationed at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Her research focuses on youth mental health and leisure within Swedish contexts.
Her primary research areas include youth mental health, leisure studies, gender and health, civic engagement, rural youth studies, and sexual health. She employs qualitative methods, particularly visual methodologies, to investigate how young people navigate mental health challenges through leisure activities, civic participation, and community engagement. Her work emphasizes marginalized populations, including trans youth, racialized youth in rural settings, and NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) young people.
Analysis of her 12 publications (2018-2024) reveals consistent thematic focus on youth mental health and leisure, predominantly using qualitative approaches in Swedish settings. Key recurring themes include belonging, power dynamics, social determinants of mental health, and the role of structural factors in shaping youth experiences. Her research spans diverse populations across rural/urban divides, gender identities, and migration backgrounds.
Gotfredsen teaches qualitative methods with specialization in visual methodologies and gender/health intersections. She led a 2018-2019 research project examining how civically-engaged youth develop collective capacity to influence alcohol consumption patterns.
