Dr. Anne-Catherine Heuskin is a Researcher at the Namur Research Institute for Life Sciences, University of Namur. She holds a PhD in Physics from the same institution (2013) and conducted a postdoctoral fellowship at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2014–2015). Her research focuses on radiation biology, nanoparticle applications in proton therapy, and space-related radiobiology. Key projects include PFAS-B (electron beam water treatment), RISE-LARN (space biology studies on bdelloid rotifers), and MitoRad (proton therapy optimization via mitochondrial pathways). She has supervised over 12 thesis projects and actively collaborates with international institutions like NASA and CERN.
- Education: PhD in Physics (2013), Master in Physics (2009)
Research interests include understanding radiation effects on organisms (e.g., rotifers, ants, C. elegans), developing nanoparticle-based radiosensitizers, and advancing FLASH radiotherapy through UHDR (ultra-high dose rate) experiments. Awards include the BAEF Fellowship (2014), Fulbright Scholarship (2014), and Prix Mersch (2009).
Her work bridges physics, biology, and medicine, with a focus on translational research for cancer therapy and space exploration. Lab activities include proton irradiation setups, transcriptomic analyses, and computational modeling of radiobiological phenomena.
