Dr. Anne Burkus-Chasson is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with affiliations in the School of Art and Design, East Asian Languages and Cultures, Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies, and Center for Global Studies. Her research focuses on 17th-century Chinese painting and woodblock-printed books, exploring themes of self-representation, visual theory, and word-image relationships. She is currently rethinking traditional Chinese gardens through environmental humanities frameworks and preparing a monograph on Chen Hongshou and illustrated books.
Education: MA (1977) and PhD (1987) in Art History from UC Berkeley. Notable awards include the Arthur Kingsley Porter Prize (1995). Major grants include J. Paul Getty Postdoctoral Fellowships (1988, 1992–93) and a Senior Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art (2017–18).
Teaching includes courses like 'Ways of Seeing in Edo Japan' and 'Word and Image in Chinese Art.' Her research outputs span articles on Chen Hongshou, Peony Pavilion visual culture, and book history. She actively participates in interdisciplinary initiatives through university centers.
