Professor Karil Kucera holds dual appointments in the Departments of Art and Art History and Asian Studies at St. Olaf College. Her research focuses on sacred sites in Chinese Buddhism, notably the Baodingshan cliff sculptures in Sichuan province, documented through her book and the digital project Baodingshan.org. She also explores 20th-century Chinese visual culture and Japanese print traditions, curating exhibitions using the college's Flaten Art Museum collections.
Education: Ph.D. in Chinese Art History (University of Kansas), M.A. (University of Oregon), B.A. (University of Wisconsin-Madison). Previously served as postdoctoral fellow at University of Washington, Chair of Asian Studies, and Director of the Asian Conversations program. Currently Associate Dean of Interdisciplinary and General Studies and Director of the Center for Integrative Studies through 2024-25 sabbatical.
Research emphasizes digital humanities and pedagogy, co-creating IDEAS (Image Database to Enhance Asian Studies) and collaborating with Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Teaches courses like 'Sacred Sites of Asia' and 'Buddhism through Text & Image', integrating fieldwork and digital resources. Advises student exhibitions on topics including Yoshida family woodblock prints and Chinese ceramics.
Her work bridges traditional art forms with modern digital methods, emphasizing cross-cultural dialogue through interdisciplinary programs and museum collaborations.
