Overview
Anne Benjaminse is an Associate Professor affiliated with the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Groningen (UMCG), where she leads the SMART Movements research group. Her work focuses on injury prevention, particularly in athletes, with a specialization in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and sports biomechanics. She has supervised multiple PhD candidates and actively contributes to peer review for journals like Journal of Applied Biomechanics and Journal of Athletic Training.
Research Interests
Dr. Benjaminse’s research integrates biomechanics, motor learning, and clinical practice to address injury risks in sports. Key areas include ACL injury mechanisms, sport-specific neurocognitive tests, and the application of machine learning to analyze joint loads during agility movements. Her recent work emphasizes ecological validity in injury prevention programs and the role of cognitive demands in movement execution.
Recognition
- Recipient of the TulipMed Prijs voor Sportgeneeskunde (2016) for her doctoral research.
- Winner of the Gould Excellence in Clinical Inquiry Award (2015) for innovative feedback techniques in injury prevention.
- Awarded the GOTS “Paper of highest public interest” for translating motor learning principles into ACL prevention strategies (2018).
Collaborations
Her interdisciplinary collaborations span biomechanics, sports medicine, and data science, with recent projects involving wearable technology and machine learning applications in football (soccer) and basketball.
