Anna V. Hine is a Professor of Protein Engineering at Aston University’s School of Biosciences and holds the role of LHS Associate Dean for Enterprise and Impact within the College of Health and Life Sciences. She joined Aston in 1995 as a Lecturer and has held progressive academic roles including Reader (2013), Associate Dean (2015), and Chair (2018). Since 2003, she has worked part-time (0.7–0.8 FTE) while balancing her academic career with innovation and entrepreneurial activities, including a Medici Fellowship and leadership roles in startups like ProtaMAX Ltd. Her research focuses on protein engineering, synthetic biology, and interdisciplinary applications in biomedicine, with notable contributions to antibody alternatives and photonic biosensors. Her work has led to commercialization successes, including the Colibra™ technology acquired by Isogenica Ltd. She has received prestigious awards such as the BBSRC Commercial Innovator of the Year 2013 and holds memberships in the Royal Society of Biology and the Biochemical Society.

Research Interests: Anna’s research bridges molecular biology and physical sciences, emphasizing protein-ligand interactions and enabling technologies for biomedicines. She pioneered work on protein-DNA interactions using zinc fingers and developed novel screens for biotech process engineering. Her recent projects include synthetic replacements for monoclonal antibodies via FET-OPEN collaborations and photonic biosensors for real-time binding analysis. These innovations highlight her commitment to translating science into practical biomedical solutions.
