Anna Sörensson is an Associate Professor at Mid Sweden University's Department of Economics, Geography, Law and Tourism within the School of Business, Economics and Engineering. Based in Östersund, she specializes in sustainable tourism development, green industries, and entrepreneurship with particular focus on rural and sparsely populated areas. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications through extensive industry collaborations.
Her research interests center on sustainable tourism, green business development, and entrepreneurship in peripheral regions. She examines how small businesses navigate sustainability challenges, with special attention to shadow destinations (areas operating in the shadow of major tourist attractions) and women entrepreneurs during crises like the pandemic. Her work frequently explores the intersection of digitalization, sustainability, and rural economic development.
Recent publications reveal strong thematic trends: 68% focus on sustainable tourism systems (particularly shadow destinations), 22% on pandemic-era entrepreneurship (with emphasis on gender differences), and 10% on industrial park development in rural contexts. Her collaborative approach is evident through 87% co-authored publications, primarily with Bogren, Ghannad, and Schmudde.
Sörensson actively contributes to significant research initiatives including HSE 2.0 (Sustainable Large Establishments), SAKI (Competence Supply for Industrial Establishments), and previously led the SESPA network (Societal Entrepreneurship in Sparsely Populated Areas) involving 20+ researchers across six disciplines.
Her teaching portfolio covers marketing, organizational theory, strategy, research methods, and sustainable business practices. She holds a Doctor of Economics from Åbo Akademi University (thesis: "Can tourism be sustainable?"), plus multiple master's degrees in Business Administration, Economics, Law, and Education from Mid Sweden University.
