Anna Petretei serves as a Researcher at the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) within the Faculty of Law at the University of Lapland, Finland, while concurrently pursuing her PhD in the Doctoral Programme: the Arctic in a Changing World. Her academic trajectory bridges legal scholarship with Arctic policy development, focusing on indigenous rights in resource extraction contexts.
She earned her foundational law degree from the University of Pécs, Hungary, where her master's thesis established her specialization in Sámi minority rights. This early work directly informs her current doctoral research examining indigenous security frameworks.
Her research program critically analyzes extractive industry impacts on Arctic indigenous communities, with particular emphasis on mining legislation, human rights impact assessments, and societal security frameworks. She investigates how corporate behavior and transboundary environmental regulations affect Sámi livelihoods, integrating legal analysis with security studies to develop practical governance tools for vulnerable northern communities.
Her publication record reveals a consistent scholarly trajectory centered on Arctic indigenous security, demonstrating increasing methodological sophistication in human rights impact assessments and interdisciplinary security frameworks. Recent works synthesize legal, economic, and sociological perspectives to address jurisdictional gaps in protecting indigenous rights during resource development.
Petretei has secured significant research funding through projects including HuSArctic (Research Council of Finland, 2015-2018), SusMinNor (European Regional Development Fund, 2015-2016), and SUMILCERE (European Commission, 2013-2015), establishing her as a key contributor to Arctic legal scholarship. These collaborative initiatives examine sustainable mining practices, societal security paradigms, and indigenous vulnerability in northern Fennoscandia.
As an active academic citizen, she organizes specialized forums like the 2017 International Conference on Policy towards Indigenous Peoples and contributes to editorial boards, while maintaining her primary research base at NIEM where she develops legal tools for indigenous rights protection in rapidly changing Arctic environments.
