Lotta Viikari is a Professor at the Faculty of Law, Department of Law, Markets and the Environment at the University of Lapland. Her research focuses on environmental law, international law, natural resource management, and indigenous rights. She has led projects addressing Sámi knowledge systems, space law, and drone regulations in Arctic regions.
Her work spans interdisciplinary topics such as whaling governance, space debris mitigation, and cultural preservation. Key projects include MÁHTUT (Sámi knowledge and the green transition), UAV-MEMO (drone use in Arctic mining), and AIRBEAM (drone operations for emergency monitoring). She has also contributed to international legal frameworks, including space activity dispute resolution.
Viikari’s research outputs include peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on topics like indigenous self-determination, human rights frameworks for local communities, and space law. She has collaborated internationally and secured funding from agencies like the European Social Fund and the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (TEKES).
