Dr. Anna McSweeney is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History of Art and Architecture at Trinity College Dublin, where she also directs the MPhil program. Her research focuses on Islamic art and architecture of the medieval Mediterranean, particularly Spain and North Africa, with expertise in ceramics, manuscripts, and architectural interiors. She co-leads the British Academy/Leverhulme-funded Crafting Medieval Spain project with the Victoria & Albert Museum, exploring Islamic art’s legacy in Europe. McSweeney collaborates closely with institutions like the Chester Beatty Library and has organized major conferences such as Seeing Isfahan: Perspectives on the Safavid Image (2022) and Islamic Art in Ireland (2025). Her work addresses repatriation, global art history, and the intersection of museums and heritage preservation.
Her teaching spans Islamic art, medieval Mediterranean studies, and museum practices. She has held fellowships at the Warburg Institute (London) and the Museum für Islamische Kunst (Berlin), contributing to exhibitions including Metadata: How We Relate to Images (2018). McSweeney’s publications include From Granada to Berlin: the Alhambra Cupola (2020) and numerous articles on Nasrid architecture, mudéjar styles, and object biographies. She advises PhD candidates focusing on Islamic art’s global dimensions and Irish collections.
Her research bridges material culture, transregional histories, and contemporary heritage debates, emphasizing collaborative projects between academia and cultural institutions.
