Anna-Karin Edberg is Professor of Nursing at Kristianstad University's Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing Education and Integrated Health Sciences. She leads the Health in Collaboration research platform and serves as Principal Investigator for major research initiatives including the PERLE study on person-centered care in residential facilities.
Her educational background includes doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine (1997-1999), followed by positions as Researcher (2001-2004) and Associate Professor (2004-2008) at Lund University, and Professor of Geriatric Nursing (2008-2011). Her research career spans over three decades with more than 242 publications and significant contributions to nursing science.
Edberg's research focuses on the care and welfare of older people, particularly in dementia care, palliative care, and addressing existential loneliness in frail elderly populations. Her work has evolved from specialized dementia research to broader geriatric care concerns, with significant emphasis on person-centered approaches. She developed the internationally recognized Strain in Dementia Care Scale (2015), now available in multiple languages including Swedish, English, and Japanese.
Her recent publications demonstrate continued productivity with 15 publications in 2025 alone, primarily focusing on person-centered care implementation, ethical challenges in residential care during the pandemic, and doctoral education frameworks. The research shows strong thematic consistency in geriatric nursing, with increasing attention to leadership dimensions in care settings.
Among her significant scientific contributions are the LONE study (2015-2021) on existential loneliness in frail older people, which generated three doctoral theses, and the current PERLE project (2020-2026) focusing on person-centered care and leadership in special housing. She also contributes to the EU-funded ALONE study examining existential loneliness during adolescence.
Edberg actively supervises doctoral students, currently mentoring Anna-Carin Karlsson and M. Jönsson in the PERLE project, with dissertation defenses scheduled for 2026-2027. Her research collaborations span multiple institutions including Lund University, Malmö University, Umeå University, and the University of Sydney, Australia. She has served as external reviewer for academic positions at Aalborg University (Denmark) and Åbo Akademi (Finland), and evaluated grant applications for Karolinska Institutet.
Her work extends beyond academia through 26 media appearances including TV interviews on SVT, radio programs on Swedish Radio P1, and newspaper articles addressing issues like reducing loneliness among elderly populations and the dangers of continued isolation for older adults during the pandemic.
