Dr. Johnsson Harrie's research primarily focuses on social studies and history didactics, as well as teaching materials research. Her dissertation examined how the Swedish state reviewed and approved teaching materials for social studies education from 1938-1991. She has conducted significant research on sponsored teaching materials, textbook analysis (particularly regarding 'us-and-them' thinking in textbooks), and how cultural heritage environments are used in school teaching from children's perspectives. Her work often addresses how textbooks handle national minorities and societal perspectives.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on social studies education, teacher training, and historical consciousness. The research shows a trajectory examining how historical understanding develops among both students and student teachers, with particular attention to the materials and environments that shape this learning. Her work bridges theoretical educational research with practical applications in classroom settings.
As an educator, Anna Johnsson Harrie teaches social studies didactics in various teacher training programs and supervises doctoral students in pedagogical work with a focus on social studies didactics. She serves as an assistant supervisor for doctoral education in her specialized field. Her leadership role as Vice Dean for Undergraduate Education demonstrates her significant contribution to the strategic development of educational sciences programs at Linköping University.
